New Delhi: Union Minister Kiren Rijiju introduced the Waqf Amendment Bill in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday, asserting that several opposition MPs privately supported the bill despite their parties' official stance against it.

Rijiju accused opposition leaders of opposing the bill for political reasons, alleging that some religious leaders were misleading Muslims about its implications. "Many Congress leaders and opposition parties privately say this bill is needed, but they oppose it for vote bank politics," he told reporters.

He also compared the situation to the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), claiming that similar misinformation had been spread earlier. "The same people said that CAA would strip Muslims of their citizenship, but nothing like that happened," he added.

Rijiju emphasised that the bill was in the national interest and aimed at benefiting the entire country, particularly women and children. "Any work in the national interest, especially for the welfare of women and children, will not be compromised," he said.

Both the BJP and Congress issued whips to their MPs, ensuring their presence in the House during the discussion. An eight-hour debate on the bill has been scheduled, with the possibility of an extension.

The opposition has strongly criticised the bill and the introduction of the bill has triggered a heated debate in Parliament.

Dispur: In the backdrop of the BJP-led NDA’s sweeping win in the Assam elections on Monday, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma hit out at the Congress party, picking senior leader of the rival party Pawan Khera who had alleged that Sarma’s wife had multiple passports.

Speaking to BJP activists and reporters after the poll results were announced, the CM opined that Khera should no longer hold the position of spokesperson in the Congress, adding, “The people of Assam have Pawan Khera eat ‘pera’.”

Sarma, who called the people’s mandate in the state both historic and emotional, said, “The state’s image had started changing since 2016, under the influence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Assam is now being considered a development-orientated state because of them.”

Commenting on the Congress leadership, the CM said that the people believed the BJP’s allegations during the campaign. “Congress leaders, however, faced rejection from their own communities,” he claimed and added that the BJP government would continue raising certain issues even after the elections.
