Kolkata: Wazahat Khan, the man whose police complaint led to the arrest of influencer and law student Sharmistha Panoli, has himself been arrested by Kolkata Police.

Khan, who had been evading authorities, was taken into custody following a series of raids after reportedly ignoring multiple police summons.

He has been booked under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including those related to promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion and race, as well as for alleged attempts to insult religion.

His arrest follows the case involving Panoli, who was taken into custody on May 30 from Gurugram, Haryana. The arrest stemmed from a controversial video she posted on social media, in which she allegedly used abusive language and made communal remarks targeting certain Bollywood celebrities for their silence on "Operation Sindoor".

The video drew widespread outrage, leading Khan to file a formal complaint. On May 15, a case was registered against Panoli under various legal provisions related to hurting religious sentiments. The influencer was subsequently arrested, produced before a magistrate, and remanded to 14 days’ judicial custody. The video was later taken down, and Panoli issued a public apology.

Following her arrest, Khan reportedly went missing. His father, Saadat Khan, told the media that Wazahat had not returned home and that the family had received threatening calls accusing them of “ruining Panoli’s life.”

Meanwhile, the Calcutta High Court on June 5 granted interim bail to Sharmistha Panoli. The court directed her to furnish a bail bond of Rs 10,000.
