Thrissur: A tragic case of food poisoning has resulted in the death of a woman and the hospitalization of at least 170 individuals after they consumed 'Kuzhi Mandi,' a popular Yemeni dish similar to biryani, along with mayonnaise from a restaurant in Thrissur. The incident, reported on Monday, May 27, has shocked the local community.

The affected individuals, mostly from Perinjanam and Kaipamangalam, experienced severe symptoms such as vomiting, nausea, and diarrhea after eating at Zain Restaurant in Perinjanam, situated on the Guruvayur-Kodungallur highway, on the night of May 25.

The deceased has been identified as 56-year-old Nusaiba from Kutilakkadavu in Thrissur. According to reports, Nusaiba was initially taken to a nearby primary health center on Monday after feeling unwell. As her condition deteriorated, she was referred to a private hospital in Irinjalakuda and later shifted to the Medical College, where she passed away in the early hours of Tuesday, May 28.

Nusaiba's body is set to undergo a post-mortem examination, including a scientific investigation of her internal organs, to determine the exact cause of death.

In response to the incident, officials from the police, food safety, health department, and local panchayat inspected the restaurant. However, they did not find any stale or spoiled food during their inspection. The restaurant has been temporarily closed as the health department investigates whether the mayonnaise contributed to the food poisoning.

The Kerala government had previously banned mayonnaise made with eggs in restaurants in January 2023 following several food poisoning cases across the state. This decision came after a similar incident where a 20-year-old woman, Anju Sreeparvathy from Kasargod, died after consuming mandi from a restaurant.
