Gorakhpur: In a shocking incident, a young woman lost her life during a cesarean operation allegedly performed by an OT technician posing as a doctor in Gorakhpur. The unqualified man had reportedly conducted 15 surgeries earlier. Police sealed the unlicensed hospital and arrested the technician, his son, and an Asha worker after a complaint was filed by the victim’s husband. The police are searching for the couple who owns the hospital.

On April 27, when the woman, a resident of Gohali Basant village, went into labor, the family informed Asha worker Gangotri Devi, who advised them to rush to Shri Govind Hospital in Bansgaon. At the hospital, owners Amrish Rai and his wife, Sanno, claimed that the baby was in breech position and an emergency C-section was required.

Dinesh Chaurasia, the victim’s husband, recounted that a man introduced as a surgeon, later identified as Pannalal, entered the operating theater to perform the surgery. Pannalal was not a physician but an OT technician without medical qualifications. While delivering the baby, the postoperative condition of the mother aggravated and she expired the next day. The family had been directed to stay outside and only been informed about her death hours afterward.

Initial investigations revealed that Shri Govind Hospital was operating without a license and that neither of the owners had any medical training. Over the last three years, Pannalal was reportedly brought in by the owners to perform cesarean operations. During interrogation, Pannalal admitted that he performed 15 such surgeries. The hospital charged families between ₹ 5,000 and ₹20,000 per delivery and paid untrained nurses and Asha workers on a commission basis.

The deceased’s family refused to perform the last rites until all those responsible is brought to justice. Police have shut down both Shri Govind Hospital and another facility, Hari Medicare, run by Pannalal’s son Niraj Kumar after public outcry. Search for the hospital owner, Amrish, and Sanno, who fled after the incident was initiated by authorities.

SSP Gaurav Grover confirmed the arrests and informed that further action is being taken. The police have also requested the Indian Medical Association to address broader concerns about such establishments and illegal practices.

Panaji (PTI): As part of a crackdown against tourist establishments violating laws and safety norms in the aftermath of the Arpora fire tragedy, Goa authorities on Saturday sealed a renowned club at Vagator and revoked the fire department NOC of another club.

Cafe CO2 Goa, located on a cliff overlooking the Arabian Sea at Vagator beach in North Goa, was sealed. The move came two days after Goya Club, also in Vagator, was shut down for alleged violations of rules.

Elsewhere, campaigning for local body polls, AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal said the fire incident at Birch by Romeo Lane nightclub at Arpora, which claimed 25 lives on December 6, happened because the BJP government in the state was corrupt.

An inspection of Cafe CO2 Goa by a state government-appointed team revealed that the establishment, with a seating capacity of 250, did not possess a no-objection certificate (NOC) of the Fire and Emergency Services Department. The club, which sits atop Ozrant Cliff, also did not have structural stability, the team found.

The Fire and Emergency Services on Saturday also revoked the NOC issued to Diaz Pool Club and Bar at Anjuna as the fire extinguishers installed in the establishment were found to be inadequate, said divisional fire officer Shripad Gawas.

A notice was issued to Nitin Wadhwa, the partner of the club, he said in the order.

Campaigning at Chimbel village near Panaji in support of his party's Zilla Panchayat election candidate, Aam Aadmi Party leader Kejriwal said the nightclub fire at Arpora happened because of the "corruption of the Pramod Sawant-led state government."

"Why this fire incident happened? I read in the newspapers that the nightclub had no occupancy certificate, no building licence, no excise licence, no construction licence or trade licence. The entire club was illegal but still it was going on," he said.

"How could it go on? Couldn't Pramod Sawant or anyone else see it? I was told that hafta (bribe) was being paid," the former Delhi chief minister said.

A person can not work without bribing officials in the coastal state, Kejriwal said, alleging that officers, MLAs and even ministers are accepting bribes.
