Guntur: An elderly YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) worker, Cheeli Singaiah, was crushed to death by a vehicle that was reportedly carrying former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy during a rally near Guntur. Several videos shared online suggest that the vehicle involved was indeed the one Jagan was travelling in, reported The New Indian Express.

Initially, the incident was reported as an accident involving an unknown unofficial vehicle from Jagan's convoy.

The accident happened on June 18 near Etukuru village on the outskirts of Guntur city. Jagan was on his way to Sattenapalli to visit the family of a YSRCP activist who had died by suicide a year ago. The police had officially allowed only three vehicles and around 100 supporters for the visit. However, a much larger crowd ended up following the convoy from Tadepalli to Rentapalla village.

Singaiah was one of the many supporters present. Reports say he tried to approach Jagan’s vehicle to offer flowers. In the crowd and confusion, he was pushed and fell near the moving vehicle’s wheels. Eyewitnesses said they shouted to alert the driver, but the vehicle didn’t stop. A local Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) rushed him to the hospital, but doctors declared him dead on arrival.

At first, Guntur Superintendent of Police Satish Kumar stated that the victim was run over by an unidentified vehicle from the convoy. But after checking CCTV footage and gathering more details from the site, police sources reportedly confirmed that it was the same vehicle carrying Jagan.

Subsequently, YSRCP leaders met Singaiah’s family and offered ₹10 lakh as ex gratia compensation.

Meanwhile, Guntur district YSRCP in-charge and former minister Ambati Rambabu accused others of spreading false news to take attention away from Jagan’s tour. “Jagan is someone who would stop everything to help an injured person,” TNIE quoted him as saying.

He also added that the government failed to provide enough security during the former CM’s tour, putting his safety at risk.

Bhatkal: The Karnataka unit of the All India Ideal Teachers Association (AIITA) has welcomed the Karnataka government’s decision to strictly ban school children from dancing to obscene songs during educational and cultural programmes in government, aided, and private schools across the state.

AIITA Karnataka State President M. R. Manvi congratulated the government for taking what he termed an important step to preserve the sanctity of education.

“Such decisions to safeguard the dignity of school children and uphold the values of education are the need of the hour. This rule should not be limited to government schools alone but must be strictly implemented in all private educational institutions as well,” he said.

He further urged the government to address other concerns within school programmes.

“The government should not only prohibit obscene dances in the name of school anniversaries, but also ensure that plays and dialogues that incite religious hatred are avoided. Schools should be centres of harmony, not platforms for spreading hatred,” he added.

According to a recent circular issued by the Department of School Education and Literacy, obscene dances are adversely affecting the mental health and moral values of students.

In this regard, schools have been advised to use songs that promote nationalism, positive thinking, the greatness of Kannada culture, and value-based traditions instead of inappropriate content during programmes.
The circular also emphasises that students should be dressed in decent attire.

AIITA also backed the department’s warning that disciplinary action would be taken against head teachers if such guidelines are violated. The association has further demanded that district Deputy Directors of Public Instruction strictly monitor the implementation of these rules.
