Kasaragod: In a tragic sequence of events, a 19-year-old medical student who had allegedly attempted suicide by hanging herself was rescued by her family but later died in a road accident while being rushed to the hospital. The incident took place near Bethurpara in Badiadka on Wednesday morning.

The deceased has been identified as Mahima (19), daughter of Babu of Tachaar Kundu, Bethurpara, and a final-year MBBS student.

According to police sources, Mahima reportedly attempted to hang herself inside her bedroom on Wednesday morning. Her brother Mahesh noticed the act in time, untied her, and along with their mother Vanaja, immediately placed her in a car to take her to a hospital in Kasaragod.

However, about one kilometre from their house, the car met with an accident near Bethurpara. Local residents rushed to help and took all three to the hospital, but Mahima succumbed to her injuries on the way. Mahesh and Vanaja sustained minor injuries and are out of danger.

Police said it is yet to be determined whether Mahima died from the injuries sustained in the accident or from the suicide attempt. The exact cause of death will be known only after the post-mortem report is received.

A case has been registered at the Badiadka Police Station, and an investigation is underway into both the attempted suicide and the accident
