Mangaluru, July 26: Puttur police arrested an accused who was absconding for the last 44 years in a sandalwood smuggling case. The arrested accused was identified as Abbas.

It is said that Abbas was escaped from the police when his motorbike was stopped and checked at Bullerikatte Wood Check Post by head constable Gangoji Rao while smuggling 7 kg sandalwood on his bike on July 15, 1974. A case was registered at Puttur police station.

Head constable Parameshwar who collected information about the accused for the last four months, arrested the accused at Pannada Kunnilla near Changala village in Kasaragod district in Kerala on Wednesday. Abbas was released on bail on Thursday, according to police.
