Mangaluru: The Indian Design School (IDS) hosted its first College Day with AK-Interior Design Wow Awards (AK-IDWA) 2020 at the Taj Gateway, Mangalore on Friday 7th February, 2020 at 7:30 in the evening.
This event was the first of its kind College Day of any institution in Mangalore as it focused on celebrating design and the recognition of talents that contributed to design. It was an awards night filled with excitement and knowledge sharing; an event that saw some of the most talented individuals in Mangalore gathered at one place to celebrate design.
The AK-IDWA aims to recognize individuals and teams of design background who have made a substantial contribution in the field of innovative designs. It serves as a platform that recognizes the excellence of the work in the field of design which have taken a step beyond the practical purpose of a building. The awards encompass the works of both professionals and design students, with categories ranging from PU students and design students to professionals in the field of residential and commercial design.
The event comprised of not just presenting awards to the winners of AK-IDWA competition but also sharing of knowledge through design talks, popularly known as ‘Design Celebration’ at IDS. The guest of honor and key speaker of the event was Ar. Gayathri Shetty of the esteemed Bangalore-based design firm Gayathri and Namith Architects (GNA) and member of the National Executive Committee of IIID, who gave deep insights in architecture and interior design through several of her award-winning projects. The event was also attended by Ar. Shyamala Prabhu (also a NEC member at IIID), Dr. Kishori Nayak (Professor at Mangalore University) and M. Ahmed (chairman of the AK Group of Companies) along with AK Niyaz (Managing Director) and the other directors of the AK Group – Abdul Razak T, AK Naushad, Dr.Prashanth M.A, AK Nazim, Anil Kumar and AK Sajid.
The Best Designer in the residential villa category was won by Id. A.H. Shahnawaz (Firm: THEME). The Best Designer in the residential apartment category was won by Eng. Meraj Yusuf (Firm: Inland Ornate). The Best Designer in the commercial category was won by Ar. Suprith Alva (Firm: Alva & Associates). The Best Student Designer in the space design category was won by Darshan Chittaranjan & Sumedha Mukherjee (SJB School of Architecture and Planning, Bangalore). The Creative Competition for PU Students was won by Lishawn D’souza of St. Aloysius College (1st Prize) and Dheergha M of Canara Pu College (2nd Prize). The winners of the IDS Design Fest were also awarded during this event. IDWA also included the “Lifetime Achievement Award” which is presented for the meritorious contribution in the field of design. This year it was presented to Ar. K.S. Sherigar, an exceptional artist and architect for his tremendous contribution to the field of arts and education and inspiring and guiding budding talents. All the awards were presented by the guests and dignitaries present at the event.
AK-IDWA also saw the launch of Master Class – a platform to learn new and variety of skills through short-term certificate courses in design, culinary arts, jewellery design, calligraphy and home science aimed for people of all backgrounds who want to learn new skills in short time. The launching was done by Dr. Nafeesa Shirin, Director of IDS and Faria ,H.R Director of The Shepherds International Academy. The planning and execution of the IDS Design Fest and AK-IDWA was done by Ar. Mohammed Nissar (Chairman of IDS), Dr. Nafeesa Shirin (Director of IDS) and Ar. Ramnath Nayak (Principal of IDS). The event was concluded by a grand dinner, courtesy of The Taj, Gateway. IDWA is sponsored by the AK Group of companies, along with Apple Ply and the Indian Design School who have been providing it a constant support over the years.

Bengaluru (PTI): The Karnataka government has issued directions to municipal corporations across the state to regulate and prohibit feeding pigeons in public places, citing serious public health concerns.
Deputy Secretary to Government V Lakshmikanth has written to the Urban Development Department requesting it to issue directions to the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) and all municipal corporations to take immediate steps to implement the measures.
In an official note dated December 16 issued by the Health and Family Welfare Department and released to the media on Wednesday, the department said uncontrolled feeding of pigeons in public places has resulted in large congregations of birds, excessive droppings and serious health concerns, particularly respiratory illnesses linked to prolonged exposure to pigeon droppings and feathers such as hypersensitivity pneumonitis and other lung diseases.

"The commissioner, the Greater Bengaluru Authority and the Commissioners and chief officers of other municipal corporations shall take necessary action to mitigate the causes of dangerous disease spread by pigeon and enforce specified guidelines in their respective jurisdiction," the note said.
According to the department, these include a prohibition on feeding pigeons or causing pigeons to be fed in areas where it may cause nuisance or pose a health hazard to the public. Pigeon feeding shall be permitted only in designated areas in a controlled manner, subject to certain conditions.
"The designated areas may be selected in consultation with stakeholders. The responsibility for upkeep of the designated areas and compliance to the directions shall be taken up by some charitable organisation or an NGO. The feeding in designated areas shall be permitted only for some limited hours in the day," it said.
The note further stated that authorised officers of local authorities shall issue on-the-spot warnings and may impose fines for violation of the order, or lodge complaints to prosecute offenders under Sections 271 (Negligent act likely to spread infection of disease dangerous to life) and 272 (Malignant act likely to spread infection of disease dangerous to life) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
It also directed local authorities to conduct public awareness campaigns, including the display of signboards, banners and digital messages, explaining the health hazards associated with pigeon droppings and feathers, the content of the regulatory directions and penalties for violations, and alternative humane methods of bird conservation that do not endanger public health.
