Bantwal: In an unfortunate accident, an auto-rickshaw flipped over after the driver lost control over the vehicle resulting in the death of a 3-days-old infant. The driver and the two female passengers escaped with minor injuries in the accident that occurred at the turn near Kalpane at Benjanapadavu in the taluk.
Reportedly, one of the passengers named Umaira, a native of Gurupura - Kaikamba, had given birth to a baby girl three days ago at Lady Goschen Hospital in Mangaluru. On Wednesday evening, after being discharged from the hospital, Umaira and her family member had hitched a ride in a vacant ambulance that was going towards BC Road and had gotten off at BC Road- Kaikamba. From there, the pair got into an auto-rickshaw belonging to a resident of Goodinabali and proceeded to travel to their home.
The driver of the auto-rickshaw is said to have lost control near the Kalpane circle at Benjanapadavu causing the vehicle to roll over. Tragically, the infant which was resting on her mother’s lap was thrown out of the vehicle during the accident, resulting in the newborn's death.
The locals revealed that the two women passengers in the rickshaw sustained minor injuries and were admitted to a private hospital in BC road. Umaira, who is the mother of four boys, had given birth to a fifth child, which was a girl.

Mumbai (PTI): Police have arrested a man and seized over 500 grams of heroin worth Rs 2.54 crore in the illicit market from him in Mumbai, officials said on Friday.
The police's Anti-Narcotics Cell (ANC) made the drug seizure in Santacruz in the western suburbs. The operation was conducted by the Kandivali unit of the ANC on Thursday as part of a special crackdown against drug trafficking in the area, they said.
Acting on specific inputs, an ANC team conducted a raid in Santacruz (East) and intercepted a man. During a search, the team recovered 508 grams of high-grade heroin from his possession, an official said.
The seized contraband, a highly addictive, opioid drug derived from morphine, is estimated to be worth Rs 2.54 crore in the international market, he informed.
Following the seizure, a case was registered against the man under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985, and he was formally placed under arrest in the early hours of Friday.
The police are currently investigating the source of the drug and trying to identify the intended recipients of the consignment, he said.
