Belthangady: A farmer in Berke area of Kalmanja village in the taluk, Prashanth Kakatkar, lost all the banana plants in his farm in a case of wild elephants attack on Thursday night.

The wild elephant menace is still rampant in Belthangady taluk, much to the frustration of farmers, which is only increasing as they continue to experience heavy losses.

A couple of days ago too, a herd of wild elephants raided fields in Nerthane as well as Mittabagilu village near Dharmasthala. Both the villages have witnessed repeated attacks by the elephants over their fields. The farmers in the villages between Rekhya and Mittabagilu in the taluk live in constant fear of the ferocious pachyderms as the area borders forests.

While the people of Belthangady have been working constantly at keeping the wild elephants away from their fields, their efforts have not yet yielded suitable results.
