Bhatkal family did not hide facts, Mangaluru hospital issues clarification
Mangaluru: After a series of news reports claimed that a family hailing from Bhatkal on May 11 had hid facts to get treatment for a six-year old kid and had informed the hospital authorities that they hailed from Kundapur, the issue was widely shared and discussed on social media platforms.
Believed to be a COVID Hotspot in Uttara Kannada District, Bhatkal was already in headlines and this only added fuel to the fire. Soon, the social media users and media houses began blaming the family for manipulating facts and going out of the right way to get treatment for the kid. Several media reports had claimed that following the incident, the Tejasvini Hospital, where the patient was admitted had been completely sealed down and all the staff of the hospital were sent to quarantine.
The reports of the hospital being sealed down and staff being sent to quarantine was also proved wrong as no such measures were taken by the District Administration or by the hospital, hence a section of media houses were caught on the backfoot for delivering and spreading fake and baseless news in the backdrop of Corona Virus.
Tejasvini hospital where the kid was treated has now issued a clarification explaining the sequence of events that panned out on May 11 at the hospital. In the official statement the hospital have also made it a point that as reported by the media houses, the family did not hid or manipulate facts at the hospital.
The six-year old child, according to the hospital statement was admitted to the hospital with a displaced fracture of the elbow and absent pulse in the hand.
“As the child was hailing from a COVID Hotspot as Bhatkal had 10-12 Corona positive cases, the patient and mother were isolated and the district health officials were duly informed. As the mother was emotional and anxious it appeared that she had upper respiratory symptoms and hence once again the district health officials suggested getting a ‘throat swab’ done of both mother and child which was duly done by the health authorities in the evening of 11th May” the statement from hospital added.
“The family at no time hid the fact that they were from Bhatkal and infact had produced the ‘Aadhar card’ at the time of admission itself. What is important is that the family came to Mangalore for a medical emergency without hiding any facts and the needful was done and the child is now doing well” the hospital clarified in the statement.
The hospital further added that the child was recovering well and the pulse in her hand returned while the throat swabs report of both mother and the child returned negative following which both of them were discharged late evening on May 13.

Bengal: On way to PM's rally, 3 mowed down by train amid dense fog
Kolkata (PTI): Three persons died and three others were injured after being hit by a train amid dense fog on Saturday, while travelling to attend Prime Minister Narendra Modi's rally at Taherpur in West Bengal's Nadia district, a senior official said.
The incident occurred between Taherpur and Badkulla railway stations under the Sealdah-Krishnanagar section of Eastern Railway, he said.
Modi, whose helicopter could not land at Taherpur due to dense fog and low visibility, condoled the death of the “BJP workers” in his virtual address from Kolkata airport.
“I have come to know that some BJP workers, while travelling to the rally, lost their lives in a rail accident. My condolences are with the families of those who have lost their loved ones, and I pray for the speedy recovery of the injured,” Modi said.
The Eastern Railway official told PTI that the incident occurred in the morning when these people, who were travelling by a bus, had stopped the vehicle and walked to the railway tracks to answer nature's call.
"While three persons died on the spot, two others with injuries were admitted to a local hospital," he said.
Another person with minor injuries was released after having been administered first aid, the official said.
The deceased have been identified as Ramprasad Ghosh (74), Shaktipada Sutradhar (55) and Gopinath Das (38).
Meanwhile, Mahua Moitra, Trinamool Congress MP from Krishnanagar constituency in Nadia district, alleged that the BJP ignored the incident and went ahead with the rally.
"Terrible tragedy hushed up at altar of @narendramodi ego. @BJP4India supporters brought from far Murshidabad for PM rally in Ranaghat today," she said in a post on X.
"4 went to answer nature's call and were killed by 31814 down local train near Taherpur. BJP ignored, blacked out & went ahead with rally," Moitra claimed.
Reacting to her remarks, the West Bengal BJP, in a post on X, asserted that the TMC "has always been adept at milking tragedies", and was being "disrespectful to the unfortunate victims of this tragedy".
The TMC alleged that BJP leaders have not shown "neither concern nor compassion" over the mishap.
"The loss of three lives in Taherpur should have united everyone in grief. But @BJP4India leaders showed neither concern nor compassion," it said in another post on X.
"At this painful moment, Smt @MamataOfficial and Shri @abhishekaitc put humanity above party lines and stood beside the families of the deceased," the party said.
TMC’s on-ground leaders promptly reached out to the grieving family members, ensuring them of help and assistance, it said.
"While Delhi’s rulers chase Bengal with arrogance, our leadership chose empathy. This is the difference between politics of power and politics of people!" the TMC added.
