Mangaluru: Bearys Institute of Technology and Bearys Enviro-Architecture Design School (BEADS), Mangalore organized an orientation programme for the newly admitted undergraduate students of Computer science, Artificial Intelligence and Data science, Electronics & Communication, Civil, and Mechanical Engineering along with Bachelor in Architecture students.

The chief guest of this event was Dr. B Narayana, Professor, Department of Chemistry, Mangalore University, Mangalore. 

The inaugural address was delivered by Syed Mohammed Beary, Chairman, Bearys Group & Bearys Academy of Learning. 

The event was conducted on 31st October 31, 2022 in the international seminar Hall at 10:00 Am.

The Audience included parents, dignitaries, faculty member.The major objective of the programme was to make the parents and students aware of the academic aspects of the course, the rules and regulations of the institute and ensuring parental participation in monitoring the performance and progress of students.

The event was welcomed by Dr. S I Manjur Basha, Principal, BIT, Mangalore. Then the students were addressed by Syed Mohammed Beary, he stressed on inculcating two important things in life one is Purity of Heart and Clarity of mind to get success in any work we do. 

"The vision of Bearys Group, is to contribute significantly to a progressive, peaceful greener world along with creating leaders in every field of Science and technology. The campus reflects the sustainable green vision of the Bearys Group and introduces a futuristic concept of learning where nature and nurture come together to inspire young minds to become leaders in every walk of life." He added. 

Dr. B Narayan spoke on this occasion and said not to run behind the money, if you do work with dedication the money will follow you and stressed on innovative thinking. The objective of the event was bridge the gap between students & faculties, to make aware about the college culture and inform the students about the code of conduct and create awareness among about the various co-curricular and extra activities helps the student for their overall development Ar. Ruksana Algur, Principal, BEADS spoke on this occasion on career development process and development of skills. Followed by presentation by Dr. Aziz Mustafa B, Principal, BIES on awareness among students about the professional etiquettes. Various Heads of Dept and faculties were witnessed the event. The vote of thanks was delivered by Dr. Vinutha P R, Associate Professor, Dept of Physics the program concluded with National Anthem.

Johannesburg (AP): A 32-year-old suspect has been arrested in connection with a mass shooting which claimed the lives of 12 people including three children at an unlicensed pub earlier this month, South African police said on Monday.

The man is suspected of being one of the three people who opened fire on patrons in a pub at Saulsville township, west of South Africa's capital Pretoria, killing 12 people including three children aged 3, 12 and 16.

At least 13 people were also injured during the attack, whose motive remains unknown.

According to the police, the suspect was arrested on Sunday while traveling to Botlokwa in Limpopo province, more than 340 km from where the mass shooting took place on Dec 6.

An unlicensed firearm believed to have been used during the attack was recovered from the suspect's vehicle.

“The 32-year-old suspect was intercepted by Limpopo Tracking Team on the R101 Road in Westenburg precinct. During the arrest, the team recovered an unlicensed firearm, a hand gun, believed to have been used in the commission of the multiple murders. The firearm will be taken to the Forensic Science Laboratory for ballistic analysis,” police said in statement.

The suspect was arrested on the same day that another mass shooting at a pub took place in the Bekkersdal township, west of Johannesburg, in which nine people were killed and 10 wounded when unknown gunmen opened fire on patrons.

Police have since launched a search for the suspects.

South Africa has one of the highest homicide rates in the world and recorded more than 26,000 homicides in 2024 — an average of more than 70 a day. Firearms are by far the leading cause of death in homicides.

The country of 62 million people has relatively strict gun ownership laws, but many killings are committed with illegal guns, according to authorities.

According to police, mass shootings at unlicensed bars are becoming a serious problem. Police shut down more than 11,000 illegal taverns between April and September this year and arrested more than 18,000 people for involvement in illegal liquor sales.
