Bengaluru: Chinmayi Shetty (20), a native of Ilantila in Uppinangady, was among the 11 people who lost their lives in the stampede outside Bengaluru’s M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Wednesday. The tragedy occurred during the celebrations organised after Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) clinched their maiden Indian Premier League (IPL) title.
Chinmayi, daughter of Karunakara Shetty (a businessman from Andethadka, now residing in Tippasandra, Bengaluru) and Pooja Shetty (from Hebri, Karkala), was a second-year engineering student at Jyothy Institute of Technology, Kanakapura Road. She had sustained severe injuries in the stampede and was admitted to Manipal Hospital, where she later succumbed.
Apart from being a bright student, Chinmayi was an accomplished Yakshagana artiste and a basketball player. She was associated with the Bengaluru-based Yakshataranga team.
Her father, originally from Somwarpet, had settled in Ilantila after purchasing a house there. At the time of the incident, her mother and younger brother were staying at Andethadka and have since travelled to Bengaluru upon hearing the news.
The stampede occurred after confusion over entry procedures. While initial announcements mentioned a fee, reports say a late decision to allow free entry led to a surge in crowd numbers outside the stadium. Around 47 others were injured in the incident, which unfolded as thousands gathered to greet the RCB team after their historic IPL win.
The Karnataka government has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident.

Mumbai (PTI): The rupee depreciated 27 paise to 90.95 against the US dollar in early trade on Friday, weighed down by a strong American currency and higher crude oil prices due to the escalated geopolitical tension.
A selling rush in domestic equities further pressured the Indian currency, forex traders said.
At the interbank foreign exchange, the rupee opened at 90.94 and slipped further to trade at 90.95 against the greenback in early deals, losing 27 paise from its previous closing level.
The rupee rose 4 paise to settle at 90.68 against the US dollar on Wednesday. The currency exchange markets were closed on Thursday on account of Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti.

Analysts attributed the strengthening dollar and crude prices to heightened tension between the US and Iran, with both countries signalling they are prepared for war if talks on Tehran's nuclear programme fizzle out.
