Udupi, Dec 5: City police filed a case against VHP South region leader Manjunath Swamy on charges of giving derogatory speech against Islam during Janaagraha convention organized by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad at Sri Krishna Mutt Rajangana parking place in the city on December 2, demanding construction of Sri Ram Mandir at Ayodhya.

Following a complaint from Ansar Ahmed from Udupi that action should be taken against Manjunath Swamy as his statement was intended to disturb the law and order in the society, the police registered a case against him on Wednesday.

In his complaint, Ahmed said that Manjunath Swamy had said that ‘Islam was not a religion and Quran was not a sacred book of Islam and Islam has been promoting terrorism’. Thus Manjunath Swamy has given a wrong message to the society against the Islam. It was a great insult to the Islam and hurt the sentiments of Muslims, he said.

Ahmed also said in his complaint that Manjunath Swamy had said Muslims don’t require masjid for prayer and they could do their prayer even at toilets. Ahmed also produced a CD of Manjunath Swamy’s speech to the police.

Ranchi (PTI): A 60-year-old security guard of a temple in Ranchi was bludgeoned to death with a stone during a robbery attempt, police said on Saturday.

The incident happened late on Thursday at the Jagannath Temple in the Dhurwa Smart City area, they said.

"Three persons were arrested on Friday for killing the security guard. They confessed to the crime and told police that the victim had identified them. Therefore, in fear of being caught, they killed him by attacking him with a stone on his head," SSP Rakesh Ranjan said.

"Thereafter, they took money from the donation box and fled the scene. Two of them have criminal antecedents," he added.

Ranjan said the investigators recovered Rs 3 lakh in cash that had been robbed, the stone with blood-stained marks, and the iron rod used to break open the lock of the donation box kept there.

An FIR in this regard was lodged at the Dhurwa police station, he said, adding that the accused were sent to judicial custody by a court.
