Mangaluru: Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner Sasikanth Senthil on Tuesday warned against illegal transport and smuggling of cattle in the backdrop of Bakri-Eid while also warning the fringe elements who take law into their hands and manhandles situation when they notice someone transporting/smuggling cattle.

Addressing a press conference at his office on Tuesday morning Senthil said “Dakshina Kannada has this tradition of celebrating every festival while respecting the sentiments of all the communities and religions. Even during Bakri-Eid same tradition has been followed every year”.

“During Bakri-Eid the issue of cattle smuggling and transporting will be there, and teams and officers have been appointed to monitor and to take care of it. Nobody is entitled to take law into their hands and manhandle situation. If you have any information or suspicion people can contact the authorities by dialing 1077 or 100. Any activities of groupism and moral policing will not be tolerated and strict action will be taken against those found guilty” Senthil added.

Speaking about the Livestock Logistic App developed by District Administration Senthil added that the transporters of cattle can download the app in their mobile phone and inform the authorities about the details of their cattle transportation.

“This doesn’t mean people can transport cattle anyway by providing information on the app. It is the information the transporters have provide to ensure the cattle transportation is done properly” Senthil clarified.

Superintendent of Police Lakshmi Prasad added that Police patrol vehicles have been deployed in the wake of Bakri-Eid in the Distric Police’s jurisdiction and any complaints will be responded promptly.

“Six cases of cow theft have been reported recently of which five cases have been resolved. 19 cases of illegal transporting of cattle were reported and 12 cases of cow slaughtering have been reported. We have also reprimanded and warned 89 people who were earlier involved in similar activities” Prasad informed.

Pilibhit (PTI): A 19-day-old elephant calf, brought from Bijnor, was placed under care at the Pilibhit Tiger Reserve (PTR) on Sunday, an official said and added that the calf got separated from its mother in the forest area of Bijnor.

The calf was born on December 2 in the Bijnor forest area and got separated from its mother shortly after birth, the official said.

The forest department made several attempts to reunite it with its mother, but without any success. To ensure the calf's safety and better care, it was decided to transfer it to the Pilibhit Tiger Reserve on the instructions of senior officials.

On Saturday, Deputy Director Manish Singh received the calf. Special arrangements have been made in the reserve for its care. It has been kept in a safe and clean environment to provide it with a natural setting and protect it from external noise and disturbances.

Singh told reporters that raising an 19-day-old calf is challenging.

It requires a special diet as a substitute for mother's milk and constant monitoring.

He said a special team has been formed to provide 24-hour care. Since the calf is very young, it is being cared for like a newborn baby.

According to Singh, the primary responsibility for monitoring the calf's health has been entrusted to PTR's veterinarian, Dr Daksh Gangwar. Under his supervision, a complete record of the calf's health checkups, diet, and body temperature is being maintained. The team is ensuring that the calf does not contract any infection.
