Mangaluru: The City Police officials on Wednesday arrested a 51-year-old man, who had been accused in an extortion case and had been absconding for 23 years.
The arrested man has been identified as Bashir, a native of Ullal. He has been produced before court and remanded in judicial custody, the City Police Commissioner said in an official press release.
A case had been registered under IPC Section 130/2000 on December 17, 2000 at the Urwa Police Station in connection with an incident where a woman was intercepted at night, threatened with a knife and extorted of her necklace. The Police officials had named four people as suspects, Basheer, Hussain, Mohammad Hussain and Moideen Kudroli. While the latter three had been arrested earlier, Basheer had been absconding for 23 years.
A court summons had also been issued against Basheer but the accused had been hiding so far and was arrested on July 26, said the Police Commissioner.

Hathras (UP) (PTI): The blood-soaked body of an elderly man was found inside his house in Paharpur village here on Tuesday morning, police said.
The deceased, Jagdish Prasad Sharma, 75, who lived alone, had gone to sleep in his house on Monday night, officials said.
On Tuesday morning, his blood-soaked body was lying on a cot, with marks on his head and body indicating blows from a sharp-edged weapon, they said, adding that the police suspect murder.
Police and forensic teams reached the spot upon receiving information and sent the body for a post-mortem, they said.
Additional Superintendent of Police Ramanand Kushwaha said that Sharma, a retired Health Department employee, had been living alone since his wife's death during the COVID-19 pandemic.
He owned around 20-25 bighas of land and was also engaged in money lending, the officer said.
