Mangaluru, May 18: Considering a false WhatsApp message seriously, the police department has filed a suo-motu complaint on Friday.
The WhatsApp message was carrying an image of a church attack that took place a few years ago, but in the message, it was being projected as an incident which occurred a couple of days ago.
Addressing a press conference at his office on Friday, Mangaluru City Police Commissioner Vipul Kumar said that such messages would disturb the peace of the society. “In this regard, the police department has registered a suo-motu complaint. The investigation will be conducted, and stringent action will be taken against the guilty," he said.
“No attacks on churches have taken place after the recent elections. However, false messages are being sent on social networking sites. We can take legal action even on those who have forwarded such messages without verifying them. A recent verdict of Madras High Court has given such opportunity. Therefore, precautions must be taken while forwarding WhatsApp messages,” Vipul Kumar said.
Replying to a query, Mr. Vipul Kumar said that a ‘Social Media Monitor Cell' has been set up at the commissionerate to keep vigil on such elements.
* New WhatsApp number for Traffic:

ISLAMABAD: At least two more cases of poliovirus were reported in Pakistan, taking the number of infections to 52 so far this year, a report said on Friday.
“The Regional Reference Laboratory for Polio Eradication at the National Institute of Health has confirmed the detection of two more wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) cases in Pakistan," an official statement said.
The fresh infections — a boy and a girl — were reported from the Dera Ismail Khan district of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province.
“Genetic sequencing of the samples collected from the children is underway," the statement read. Dera Ismail Khan, one of the seven polio-endemic districts of southern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, has reported five polio cases so far this year.
Of the 52 cases in the country this year, 24 are from Balochistan, 13 from Sindh, 13 from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and one each from Punjab and Islamabad.
There is no cure for polio. Only multiple doses of the oral polio vaccine and completion of the routine vaccination schedule for all children under the age of five can keep them protected.
