Bengaluru: Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai expressed his admiration and hailed UAE based Kannadiga businessman Mohammed Meeran and said, “Mohammed Meeran Saheb is a proud non-residential Kannadiga, who has illuminated the lives of poor families and also made a remarkable contribution to his homeland by preserving the Kannada language in the Gulf”, he appreciated.

Presenting the 2020 Rajyotsava Award to Muhammad Meeran Saheb from his quarters in the Vidhana Soudha on Monday, the Chief Minister said, “Despite living abroad, his involvement in social service activities back home is commendable”, he said.

Born in Shirur village in the undivided Dakshina Kannada district, Muhammad Meeran Saheb left for the Gulf nation after his studies to make a living. Having made a name for himself as an NRI businessman, he holds great love for his home and homeland.

He is one of those rare Kannadigas who strive to develop their hometown despite living in foreign countries. He has been serving to uplift the Kannada land and language by actively working with various organizations such as the Gulf Kundapura Kannada Fraternity and Shirur Association for more than 40 years. Muhammad Meeran Saheb has helped hundreds of poor families through popular pro-people programs throughout Karnataka. He is also the administrative trustee of Shirur's renowned educational institute Green Valley National School and PU College.

As a social worker, he has helped provide many amenities including an ambulance, garbage vehicle for his hometown.  In an expression of admiration, the Department of Kannada and Culture said that it was an honor to present the 2020 Rajyotsava Award to such a great personality. 

During the Rajyotsava Award presentation ceremony, MP of Shimoga Lok Sabha constituency B. Y. Raghavendra, and others including the Director of the Department of Kannada and Culture N. Rangappa, Mohammed Meeran Saheb’s family members, and friends were also present.

Srinagar (PTI): Property worth Rs 1 crore belonging to a notorious drug peddler was on Saturday attached in Jammu and Kashmir's Srinagar, police said.

A double-storey house on eight marlas of land situated at Wantpora Eidgah, belonging to Basit Bilal Dar, a notorious drug peddler, valued at approximately Rs 1 crore, a police spokesperson said.

He said Dar is involved in two cases registered under various sections of the NDPS Act.

During investigation, it was established that the accused had acquired the said property through illicit proceeds generated from drug trafficking activities, the spokesperson said.

Consequently, the property was attached under the provisions of the NDPS Act. The attachment proceedings were conducted in the presence of the two independent witnesses, strictly in accordance with the prescribed legal procedures, he said.

As per the attachment order, the owner has been restrained from selling, leasing, transferring, altering, or creating any third-party interest in the property till further orders, the spokesperson added.
