Mangaluru: In a closely contested election, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged victorious in six out of eight constituencies in the district, solidifying its hold on the region. The Congress party managed to secure two seats, with its candidates winning in Mangaluru and Puttur.

Congress Party's U T Khader, a prominent figure in the district, emerged as the clear winner in the Mangaluru constituency. With an impressive track record, Khader clinched victory for the fifth consecutive time, demonstrating his popularity among the electorate.

The Puttur constituency witnessed a tight race between Ashok Kumar Rai of the Congress Party and the independent candidate Arun Kumar Puthila. In the end, Rai emerged triumphant, capturing the seat after a closely contested race.

Meanwhile, the BJP secured victories in the remaining six constituencies. Vedavyas Kamath emerged victorious in Mangaluru South, while Dr Bharath Shetty claimed the Mangaluru North seat. Umanath Kotian triumphed in Moodbidri, Rajesh Naik emerged victorious in Bantwal, and Harish Poonja secured the Belthangady seat. Bhagirathi Murulya, a new contender, also tasted success in the Sullia constituency, marking her debut with a win.

While U T Khader has won five times in a row, Vedavyas Kamath, Dr Bharath Shetty, Umanath Kotian, Rajesh Naik and Harish Poonja have won for the second time in a row, Bhagirathi Murulya and Ashok Kumar Rai have won in their first attempt.

Agra (UP) (PTI): Four people were arrested, after a prompt response by police following a social media alert, for allegedly sexually assaulting a woman and a girl inside a moving bus here, officials said on Tuesday.

According to an official police statement, at 12:27 am on April 27, information was received on the social media platform X about an incident of sexual assault on a bus travelling from Kanpur to Ahmedabad, which was approaching Namner crossing in Agra.

Acting under the direction of Police Commissioner Deepak Kumar, the Agra Police social media team immediately alerted the Rakabganj police station within minutes and coordinated with the victims to confirm the incident and obtain the exact location, it stated.

Police teams launched intensive checking at Namner crossing and intercepted the bus as it reached the spot. The four accused involved in the incident were apprehended on the spot, and legal action was initiated against them, the statement said.

The police said the swift response and coordination between the social media team and field units ensured timely action, bringing relief to the victims and other passengers, who expressed gratitude towards the police, it added.
