Murdeshwar: Two construction workers were killed on Thursday evening after a temporary lift installed at a building site collapsed in Murdeshwar.
The deceased have been identified as Prabhakar Muthappa Shetty, a resident of Basti in Murdeshwar, and Babanna Poojary, a resident of Byndoor taluk in Udupi district.
According to preliminary information, construction of a four-storey building was underway near Olga Mantapa in Murdeshwar. A temporary lift had been set up to transport materials to the upper floors. However, due to overloading, the lift’s rope reportedly snapped, causing the lift to crash to the ground.
Both workers inside the lift sustained fatal injuries and died on the spot. Local police and fire service personnel rushed to the site and conducted an inspection.
The bodies were later shifted to Bhatkal Government Hospital for post-mortem examination.

Srinagar (PTI): Police on Friday stopped a protest march of the BJP demanding a complete ban on liquor in Jammu and Kashmir, and detained some party leaders temporarily, officials said.
Scores of BJP leaders and workers assembled near the Ram Munshi Bagh Park here and tried to take out a protest march towards the residence of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah at Gupkar, they said.
They shouted slogans demanding a complete ban on liquor in the Union territory.
However, police stopped the protestors and took some of them into custody outside the CM's residence, the officials said. The police later dispersed the BJP workers peacefully, they added.
