Mangaluru, Dec 29: Former Lokayukta Justice Santosh Hegde said that "Madhukar Shetty was an ideal police officer who brought name to the police department. His honesty in work, courage and achievements are model to the young generation. I can't believe that such young, honest and dynamic officer is no more".

Condoling the death of senior police officer, Justice Hegde told reporters that Madhukar Shetty has lived like his father Vaddarse Raghuram Shetty, who was the editor of Mungaru newspaper, with commitment. He was an honest officer who did not yield to any influence during the operation on forest brigand Veerappan, Land scam near Bengaluru International Airport, Mining scam and others, he said.

"When I was Lokayukta, Madhukar Shetty was the officer who stood with me. Due to his honesty, daring attitude and not yielding to influence, he had to get the punishment transfers continuously. Such an officer is very rare. The state government should educate the young officers about Shetty", Justice Santosh Hegde said.

Kolkata (PTI): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday described the Waqf (Amendment) Bill as “anti-secular”, claiming that it would snatch the rights of Muslims.

Banerjee, speaking in the assembly, also said the Centre did not consult with states over the matter.

“The bill is anti-federal and anti-secular; it is a deliberate attempt to malign a particular section. It will snatch the rights of Muslims... The Centre did not consult with us on the Waqf Bill,” she said.

The chief minister added that “if any religion was attacked”, she would wholeheartedly condemn it.

Opposition parties have stridently criticised the amendments proposed by the bill in the existing Waqf Act, alleging that they violate the religious rights of Muslims.

The ruling BJP has asserted that the amendments will bring transparency in the functioning of the Waqf boards and make them accountable.

A parliamentary committee has been constituted to scrutinise the contentious bill.
