Mangaluru: The Additional District and Sessions Court, the Fast Track Special Court and POCSO Special Court (AFTSC-2) on Monday sentenced the man convicted of raping a girl in a train carriage at the Central Railway Station in the city to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 50,000.
The sentenced accused, Abutahir alias Shazil of Irvattur village of Bantwal taluk, had befriended the rape victim over phone. On June 22, 2023, the girl was on her way to school when he met her at the Mangaluru Central Railway Station and raped her in a coach of Mangaluru-Madgaon train standing on Platform 3. The girl informed her mother of the matter over phone the same night.
The victim’s mother filed a missing complaint with the Punjalkatte Police, who rescued the girl and arrested the rape accused. Then Circle Inspector Shivakumar B and Nagesh investigated the matter and filed a chargesheet in the case.
The Additional District and Sessions Court, the Fast Track Special Court and POCSO Special Court (AFTSC-2) District Judge Manu KS sentenced the rape convict to 20 years’ rigorous imprisonment, under IPC Section 376(3) and POCSO Section 4(2) and told him to pay an amount of Rs 50,000 to the victim. The District Legal Services Authority has said that the convict would have to pay an additional Rs 1.5 lakh to the victim as compensation.

Srinagar (PTI): Property worth Rs 1 crore belonging to a notorious drug peddler was on Saturday attached in Jammu and Kashmir's Srinagar, police said.
A double-storey house on eight marlas of land situated at Wantpora Eidgah, belonging to Basit Bilal Dar, a notorious drug peddler, valued at approximately Rs 1 crore, a police spokesperson said.
He said Dar is involved in two cases registered under various sections of the NDPS Act.
During investigation, it was established that the accused had acquired the said property through illicit proceeds generated from drug trafficking activities, the spokesperson said.
Consequently, the property was attached under the provisions of the NDPS Act. The attachment proceedings were conducted in the presence of the two independent witnesses, strictly in accordance with the prescribed legal procedures, he said.
As per the attachment order, the owner has been restrained from selling, leasing, transferring, altering, or creating any third-party interest in the property till further orders, the spokesperson added.
