Mangaluru: The cattle transporter who was assaulted and later arrested on Friday held a press conference in the city and has demanded justice, saying he has complete records of purchasing the buffaloes that he was transporting when he was assaulted.

Mohammad Haneef of Jokatte on the outskirts of Mangaluru city was assaulted by a group of Sangh Parivar activists recently when he was bringing four buffaloes to the city for sale. The Urwa police intervened, arrested Haneef, and then took him for a health checkup.

Haneef, who addressed a press meet, said that the police asked him to sign a declaration on the day of arrest although he had given none. “A fake case of cattle theft has been registered against me although I have shown all the documents of purchase. I bought the 10 buffaloes in Ranebennur on June 13 and got a health certificate after they were checked by a veterinarian,” he complained.

“Six of the buffaloes were sold to a slaughterhouse on June 14. I got the remaining four to my house in Jokatte and was getting them to Mangaluru when I was attacked by at least 15 people. Three of them assaulted me with weapons, apparently with an intention of killing me, but I was saved due to the intervention of the Urwa police,” said Haneef, adding that he was stripped of the Rs 7,800 in his wallet and that his vehicle was heavily damaged.

“The CCTV camera recorded that I was attacked by 15 people, but cases have been registered against only six of them under not so stringent sections of the law books. The six people have also been released on bail. I have given a written complaint to the police on June 17 and request that action is taken considering my complaint,” Haneef said.

Former mayor K Ashraf, Haneef's brother Haider Jamaat, Jokatte Gram Panchayat vice president Shamsuddin was present at the press meet.

'Give guidelines on cattle sale'

A K Ashraf, a resident of Jokatte, who spoke at the press meet, said that the Police Department should issue clear guidelines on the sale of cattle. “A former deputy commissioner had also said that an app would be released for cattle sale and purchase. The police should take safety measures to prevent crashes and problems due to sentimentality regarding cattle sale and purchase. The app should be provided for the purpose,” he stressed.

“It is fake news that cattle sale cases have been registered against Haneef in the police stations of Brahmavar and Pandeshwar. The case in Uppinangady police station is not related to a cattle sale, but for excessive loading of cattle in a vehicle. Haneef was also released on bail in the case,” Ashraf clarified citing messages that were going viral on social media sites that several similar cases were registered against Haneef.

New Delhi: Gurugram Police have arrested BJP Yuva Morcha member Hariom Mishra, for allegedly spreading a fabricated and communally sensitive story on social media about the murder of a college student in Gurugram.

Mishra who is also known as Shaurya Mishra had shared a collage of four photographs on his X handle earlier this month. He claimed that a 24-year-old college student, identified as Nikita Agarwal, had been murdered by her classmate Arif Khan in Gurugram. In the post, he alleged that the woman was blackmailed, forced into prostitution, gangraped, and eventually killed. He also claimed that Arif dumped her body in a forest. The claims were presented as being based on police sources.

The post went viral and garnering over 1.5 lakh views, and was amplified by several right-wing social media handles across X, Facebook and Instagram. A verification of the claims revealed that no such incident had taken place in Gurugram. A search of credible news reports showed no record of any such murder. The police said this news would have inevitably attracted media attention if it were true.

On December 11, Gurugram Police publicly refuted the claims through their official X handle. They stated that the information which was being circulated was completely false. The police warned that legal action would be taken against those spreading misinformation. Despite the warning, Mishra neither deleted the post nor issued any clarification.

Police in Gurugram confirmed Mishra's arrest on December 16. The police said a FIR was filed after he continued to spread false information about the alleged murder of a Hindu woman by Muslim man. Police said Mishra, a resident of Uttar Pradesh's Kaushambi district, is now being investigated.

Gurugram Police spokesperson Sandeep Singh told The Print that the accused had deliberately misrepresented facts and used objectionable content to spread hatred along religious lines. “Such posts can create serious disturbances in society, and the police take these matters very seriously,” he said.

A reverse image search conducted by fact-checkers at Alt News, revealed that the photographs used in the viral post were unrelated to the claims, while two of the images were traced to a Pinterest account belonging to influencer Maulik Chopra and another image was sourced from an Instagram post by influencer Shivam Thakur featuring a woman named Deepanshi Rawat. The fourth image was found on an unrelated Instagram page. The images depicted different individuals and had no connection to any crime.
Police said they are also investigating Mishra’s motive behind sharing the false and provocative content.
