Mangaluru: K M Sharief, a senior leader of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind and a prominent figure in the religious, social, and educational landscape of the region, passed away on Tuesday evening at a private hospital in the city following a brief illness. He was 85.
Sharief Sahab, as he was widely called, played a pioneering role in several key institutions founded and run by Jamaat e Islami Hind. He was the founder member and later president of the Sanmarga Publication Trust which publishes the Sanmarga weekly and Shanti Prakashana, a well known publishing house .
He also served as the founding president of the Shanti Educational Trust, under which the Hira Educational Institutions in Babbukatte were established. A strong advocate of empowerment through education, he was also a founder member of the Mansoora Arabic College in Hassan and served on the advisory committee of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind for Karnataka and Goa states.
Known for his simplicity, humility, and dedication to Jamaat and socio religious initiatives, KM Sharief was deeply involved in community development through education and publications. He was also the elder brother of the late Ibrahim Saeed, noted orator, thinker, and the founding editor of Sanmarga weekly.
He is survived by his wife, five sons, one daughter, and numerous relatives and admirers.
Family sources have informed that the funeral prayer will be held at the Zeenath Baksh Juma Masjid in Bunder in Mangaluru at 10:00 AM on Wednesday.

Belagavi: Speaker U.T. Khader on Friday warned that members who disrupt Assembly proceedings by talking in their seats during debates will be made to sit in the House for an entire day as a disciplinary measure.
The warning came after the Question Hour, when Deputy Leader of the Opposition Arvind Bellad was permitted to initiate a discussion on the development of North Karnataka.
At this point, expelled BJP MLA Basanagouda Patil Yatnal objected, stating that he had been seeking a debate for the past three days but had not been given an opportunity.

Responding to the objection, Speaker Khader said Bellad had already been granted permission and assured Yatnal that he would be allowed to speak at the next opportunity. He noted that even as a serious discussion was underway, several MLAs were speaking among themselves with their microphones on, disrupting the proceedings.
Expressing displeasure over the conduct of members, Khader likened the situation to football, where players receive red, yellow, or white cards for violations. Similarly, he said, the Assembly issues warning cards to members who disturb the House. If they fail to correct themselves despite repeated warnings, they would be required to remain seated in the Assembly hall for a full day as punishment, he stated.
