Mangaluru (PTI): A traffic police constable was caught red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 5,000 from a complainant, Karnataka Lokayukta officials said on Thursday.
The complainant’s vehicle was involved in a minor accident near Nanthoor Junction. While retrieving it from the Kadri Traffic Police Station, constable Tasleem (45) allegedly demanded Rs 50,000, later settling for Rs 5,000.
Unwilling to pay, the complainant alerted the Lokayukta, which laid a trap and apprehended Tasleem while he accepted the bribe.
Another constable, Vinod, has also been booked for alleged involvement in the case, Lokayukta officials added.
The investigation is being led by Superintendent of Police (in-charge) Kumarachandra and his team.

Tokyo (PTI): A powerful earthquake struck off the northern Japanese coast, and the Japan Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami alert in the region.
The quake, registering a preliminary magnitude of 7.4, occurred off the coast of Sanriku in northern Japan at around 4:53 pm (0753 GMT), at a depth of about 10 kilometres (6 miles) below the sea surface, the agency said.
Japan's NHK public television said a tsunami of up to 3 metres (10 feet) could hit the area shortly.
