Moodbidri: In an incident that occurred on Tuesday evening, a quarrel between a married couple ended with the death of the wife in the Daregudde grama panchayat’s jurisdiction at Mata in Moodbidri.

The deceased has been identified as Sunitha(30), a resident of Mata. She was reportedly murdered by her husband Dinraj, a resident of Moodbidri, and has been arrested by the Moodbidri police.

Reportedly, the husband and wife had gotten into a quarrel on Tuesday evening during which Dinraj used a blunt weapon and violently attacked his wife, beating her head. Sunitha who sustained grievous injures after the attack is said to have collapsed on the floor, while bleeding profusely from the head, it is learned.

Upon learning about the occurring, family and neighbours rushed Sunitha to the hospital and later admitted her to a hospital for further treatment in Mangaluru. However, Sunitha breathed her last around 12.20 am after the treatment proved to be ineffective, the police revealed.

The Moodbidri police who registered murder case on the accused reportedly arrested Dinraj early on Wednesday.

Sunitha who was born in a poor household was living with a mother in a rented house. Her relatives had helped get her married 1.5 years ago. Since her mother was alone, Sunitha had stayed behind with her mother and Dinraj had moved in with her, while commuting to work at a battery shop in Moodbidri every day, it is learned.

Mumbai (PTI): Police have arrested a man and seized over 500 grams of heroin worth Rs 2.54 crore in the illicit market from him in Mumbai, officials said on Friday.

The police's Anti-Narcotics Cell (ANC) made the drug seizure in Santacruz in the western suburbs. The operation was conducted by the Kandivali unit of the ANC on Thursday as part of a special crackdown against drug trafficking in the area, they said.

Acting on specific inputs, an ANC team conducted a raid in Santacruz (East) and intercepted a man. During a search, the team recovered 508 grams of high-grade heroin from his possession, an official said.

The seized contraband, a highly addictive, opioid drug derived from morphine, is estimated to be worth Rs 2.54 crore in the international market, he informed.

Following the seizure, a case was registered against the man under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985, and he was formally placed under arrest in the early hours of Friday.

The police are currently investigating the source of the drug and trying to identify the intended recipients of the consignment, he said.
