Mangaluru: Dakshina Kannada District Wakf Advisory Committee president BA Abdul Nasir Luckystar has said that newly married Muslim couples can get their marriage certificates within a fortnight by handing necessary documents to the Wakf officer.

The Karnataka government on February 21 handed the State Wakf Board the right to issue marriage certificates to Muslim couples, he said at a press meet recently, adding that submission of certain documents was mandatory for issuance of the marriage certificate.

“The bride or the groom should personally submit the application for the certificate. A joint marriage confirmation letter should be submitted and certified by a notary – a letter will not be accepted if it is from only one party. Certification of the ‘nikaahnama’ (daftar) by the president or the secretary of the Masjid where the marriage took place is also necessary,” he said.

The president added that the names of the bride and the groom will be registered as given in the ‘nikaahnama’. “The president or secretary of the Masjid should register the names of the bride and the groom as given in the Aadhaar card or the passport. If changes have been made, the applicants should present the ‘nikaahnama’ register of the Masjid before the Wakf officers. Merely attested photocopies of a ‘nikaahnama’ where the changes are made will not be accepted,” he explained.

“We find that some Masjid administrations are issuing separate nikaah certificates instead of the nikaahnama. Such certificates will not be accepted by the Wakf Board,” the president warned.

Kolkata (PTI): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday described the Waqf (Amendment) Bill as “anti-secular”, claiming that it would snatch the rights of Muslims.

Banerjee, speaking in the assembly, also said the Centre did not consult with states over the matter.

“The bill is anti-federal and anti-secular; it is a deliberate attempt to malign a particular section. It will snatch the rights of Muslims... The Centre did not consult with us on the Waqf Bill,” she said.

The chief minister added that “if any religion was attacked”, she would wholeheartedly condemn it.

Opposition parties have stridently criticised the amendments proposed by the bill in the existing Waqf Act, alleging that they violate the religious rights of Muslims.

The ruling BJP has asserted that the amendments will bring transparency in the functioning of the Waqf boards and make them accountable.

A parliamentary committee has been constituted to scrutinise the contentious bill.
