Mangaluru, November 10: "It is common to have favour and opposition to any Jayanthi's. So there is no need to celebrate them secretly. The district administration should arrange the programme in public places to help the people", said MLC Harish Kumar.

Inaugurating the Tipu Jayanti programme organised by the district administration, at zilla Panchayat auditorium here on Saturday, he said that Tipu Sultan was a brave soldier, freedom fighter. In order to educate the people, former chief minister Siddaramaiah had announced the Tipu Jayanti. But some people have been opposing it which is natural. There should not be hide and seek game in celebrating the Jayanti. It should be open to all, he said.

MLC Ivan D'SOUZA presided over the programme, in which Mangaluru university College principal Dr MA Uday Kumar gave Tipu Jayanti message.

Mayor Bhaskar K, Mangaluru taluk Panchayat president Muhammad Monu, IGP Arun Chakravarthy, police commissioner TR Suresh, SP Dr BR Ravikanthe Gowda, DC Sasikanth Senthil, ZP CEO Dr Selvamani R, ADC Kumar, ZP standing committee president UP Ibrahim were present. Police security was beefed up around the zilla Panchayat auditorium where the programme was conducted.

Since District Minister UT Khader is in foreign tour, he was absent from the programme and read out his message.

New Delhi (PTI): The Delhi Police has arrested five of a family for allegedly assaulting a police officer and snatching his service pistol during a raid in the Sultanpuri area, an official said on Wednesday.

The accused are Rajender (50), his sons Ritik (24), Sachin (29), Abhishek (26), and his daughter Komal (22). 

The incident occurred on September 2, when a team from the Anti-Narcotics Task Force arrested Alka, wife of Rajender, for possession of heroin, police said.

During the raid, Alka's family members attacked a police officer with sticks and bricks and snatched his service pistol, mobile phone, and wallet. However, the officer managed to recover his service pistol, they said.

Police said that an FIR was registered and an investigation was launched.

Acting on a tip-off, police arrested the accused, absconding since the incident, from a flat in Raghubir Nagar in Delhi.
