Bengaluru: Karnataka Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Tuesday rubbished reports that claimed the BJP government in the state was planning to drop implementing National Register of Citizens (NRC). Bommai added that there was no question of dropping the NRC.
Reports on Monday had suggested that the Yediyurappa led government was planning to drop implementation of NRC in the state and would rather create database of immigrants.
"There is no question of dropping the NRC. The policy has to be taken up by the government. We are only collecting the database [on immigrants], which we will give to the home ministry," Basavaraj Bommai said.
With the statement on Tuesday, Bommai clarified that the BJP government in the state was maintaining its pro-NRC stance.
"Everyone is talking about the implementation of NRC across India. Karnataka is one of the states where people from across the border come and settling down. There are a lot of issues here. Therefore, we are collecting all the information; we will discuss with the Union Home Minister and then will take further action." Bommai had said earlier this month.

Locals rushed to the scene, but the fire's intensity made it difficult to identify the victim.
