Karwar (PTI): One person died while several others were injured after the private bus they were travelling in fell into a stream after hitting a bridge in the wee hours of Monday, police said.

The deceased was identified as Vinayak Shinde, a resident of Hubballi, they said.

The accident occurred near Agasur village in Uttara Kannada district at around 3:00 am when the private bus was heading to Mangaluru.

Citing preliminary inquiry, a senior police officer said the driver was engaged in rash driving. While trying to avoid potholes, he lost control, causing the vehicle to hit the bridge, overturn and fall into the stream.

With the help of locals and police teams, the passengers in the bus were rescued.

During the accident, a male passenger died and 18 others sustained minor injuries. They were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment, he said.

With the help of a crane, the bus was retrieved from the stream, police said, adding further investigation is underway.

Thane (PTI): Police have arrested a 20-year-old man from Maharashtra's Thane city for allegedly travelling on a fake railway pass generated through the UTS mobile ticketing app, officials said on Sunday.

The man was travelling on a Dadar-Ambernath fast AC local train on Friday when the travelling ticket inspector asked him to show his ticket.

The accused showed a digital railway pass on his mobile phone's WhatsApp and it was later found to be fake, a Government Railway Police (GRP) official said.

He was offloaded at Thane station and brought to the GRP police station for further inquiry.

During questioning, the man claimed that a friend forwarded the fake pass to him on WhatsApp, the official said.

The man was later arrested and booked on charges of cheating and forgery, the police added.
