Puttur: The Puttur 5th District Additional and Sessions Court has sentenced Muhammad Musthafa, also known as Musthafa Sheikh, a resident of Vidyapura in Kabaka village, to three years of imprisonment along with a fine of ₹20,000 under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The court delivered the verdict on Wednesday in connection with a nine-year-old case involving the harassment of a minor girl.
The incident dates back to December 3, 2015, when the accused reportedly harassed a young girl as she walked along an unpaved path near Bypadavu in Kabaka. The girl managed to escape and immediately reported the incident to her parents.
Following a complaint, the Puttur city police registered a case, carried out an investigation, and submitted a charge sheet to the court.
In addition to the three-year sentence under the POCSO Act, the court sentenced Musthafa to one month in prison and imposed a ₹500 fine under Section 341 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for wrongful restraint. Failure to pay this fine would lead to an additional week of imprisonment. Further, the POCSO sentence specifies that non-payment of the ₹20,000 fine would result in an additional six-month jail term. Justice Saritha D delivered the verdict after examining testimonies from 14 witnesses in the case.

Srinagar (PTI): Property worth Rs 1 crore belonging to a notorious drug peddler was on Saturday attached in Jammu and Kashmir's Srinagar, police said.
A double-storey house on eight marlas of land situated at Wantpora Eidgah, belonging to Basit Bilal Dar, a notorious drug peddler, valued at approximately Rs 1 crore, a police spokesperson said.
He said Dar is involved in two cases registered under various sections of the NDPS Act.
During investigation, it was established that the accused had acquired the said property through illicit proceeds generated from drug trafficking activities, the spokesperson said.
Consequently, the property was attached under the provisions of the NDPS Act. The attachment proceedings were conducted in the presence of the two independent witnesses, strictly in accordance with the prescribed legal procedures, he said.
As per the attachment order, the owner has been restrained from selling, leasing, transferring, altering, or creating any third-party interest in the property till further orders, the spokesperson added.
