Kadaba: Revenue officials on Wednesday demolished a six-year-old home belonging to an elderly couple, Radhamma and Muttuswami, at Kapinabagilu near Kaukradi in Kadaba, claiming it was illegally constructed on government land.
Originally from Hatti in Chitradurga, the couple had migrated to Dakshina Kannada as laborers. With no property of their own, they built a modest house on government land in Kapinabagilu six years ago and have since worked as daily wagers in the area.
The demolition followed a case filed by Ashok Acharya, a resident of Belthangady, who brought the issue to the High Court, arguing the house was an unauthorized construction on government land.
The High Court issued a directive to clear the structure. In February, taluk revenue officials attempted to carry out the order but were met with strong resistance from the locals, resulting in the officials retreating without taking any action. However, the officials returned unexpectedly on Wednesday, cleared the couple’s belongings from the house, and demolished it with a bulldozer.
Present at the site during the demolition were Kadaba Tahsildar Prabhakar Khajoore, Revenue Inspector Pruthviraj, and Uppinangady police personnel, who ensured the court’s order was executed despite public sentiment against the action.
