Bhatkal: Students Islamic Organisation of India (SIO) Bhatkal unit on Saturday launched the students’ manifesto here in Bhatkal. The manifesto prepared by the organisation’s state unit has several demands of the youth and students community that has been put forth ahead of the Lok Sabha Election.
The manifesto was drafted by the organisation’s state unit and was later sent to sub-units to be released in the respective localities while also conveying it to the local leaders and candidates of the Lok Sabha Election.
“Students and youths are engulfed in various problems across the country. Government and Educational institutions have failed to contest the problems faced by them. It is in this milieu, Students Islamic organization of India, Karnataka zone has decided to come up with the Student Manifesto, in order to make Student issues such as Education and Employment a topic of discussion and Public Discourse” a press release by the organisation stated.
The manifesto focuses on four major areas like Education, Employment, Environment, Human Rights and Social Justice.
Education: In the education section the manifesto cites recommendations of several Education Commissions and seeks expenditure increase on Education to 8% of GDP to train the vast vast human resource to be competitive with rest of developing world and to rectify earlier injustices in educational expenditures.
It further speaks of ‘School for every village’ concept that needs to be introduced in rural areas of the state.
“RTE act should be expanded from the age of birth to age 18 to ensure all children get early childhood education and to encourage sensual, cognitive and sensory development in early age including health and nutrition care, qualitative - equal education in mother tongue or provincial language should be given in neighborhood schools for preliminary opportunities and sustainable development of children” it adds while also stressing upon conducting students union election in every university and college with adherence to Supreme Court’s guidelines.
Employment: The manifesto demands 100% employment guarantee along with certificate and stipend during the period of training for those undergoing skill development training under central governments Skill India scheme.
It also calls for all the vacancies in government posts and public services to be filled within six months after completion of election.
Environment: “State should attempt to replenish waters of dried up lakes. Alternative ways of storing water such as subsurface dams, coastal reservoirs have to be implemented in the state. Environmental flow assessment of rivers has to be implemented to maintain its ecological integrity, to sustain Freshwater and to maintain itself in a desired environmental condition” the manifesto further demands while also adding “State should envision by 2050 to meet all of its power demand from clean, renewable and zero emission energy sources to make sweeping changes to the environment and economy so that economic growth and environment go together”.
Social Justice: Citing Justice Ranganath Misra Commission, the manifesto bats for 10% Reservation in public services and in educational institutions, for students as well as teachers belonging to religious minorities.
Human Rights: Coming down hard on the ‘outdated and draconian laws’ laws such as Section 124A (sedition) of Indian Penal Code, Unlawful Activities Prevention Act and the National Security Act and amendments to the Armed Forces Special Powers Act and Foreign Contributions Regulation Act as well as the existing laws on blasphemy and criminal contempt of legislature and judiciary, the manifesto suggests that these laws should be done away to protect Democrati liberties of citizens.
“Section 197 of the CRPC must be scrapped to allow for the filing of cases against police officers who commit torture, concoct false cases against innocents and carry out other excesses in abuse of law” it reads in the conclusion.
The manifesto in Bhatkal was released in the presence of Zonal Secretary, Fahimuddin Bidar, District Organiser, Abud Asif, Unit President, Sanaullah Asadi, Unit Secretary, Shuaib SM and Ameer-e-Muqami, Mujahid Mustafa.

Visakhapatnam (PTI): Shafali Verma hit a blistering unbeaten 69 as India made short work of a paltry target to outclass Sri Lanka by seven wickets in the second Women’s T20 International here on Tuesday.
India now lead the five-match series 2-0 after another one-sided victory, having restricted Sri Lanka to a modest 128 for 9 through a collective display of disciplined bowling from the spin trio of seasoned Sneh Rana, ably complemented by young spinners Vaishnavi Sharma and Shree Charani.
During the chase, vice-captain Smriti Mandhana (14) fell cheaply but Shafali, enjoying new found confidence after a stellar show in the World Cup final, sent the bowlers on a leather-hunt during her 34-ball knock, winning it for her team in just 11.5 overs.
The hosts have now completed back-to-back successful chases within 15 overs which speaks volumes about the unit's sky-high confidence.
Shafali's innings had 11 punchy boundaries apart from a maximum.
The floodgates opened when left-arm spinner Inoka Ranaweera bowled a few flighted deliveries and Shafali would step out everytime to hit her over extra cover. Her footwork against slow bowlers was immaculate whether stepping out to loft the ball or rocking back to punch or pull.
Seeing her confidence, the newly appointed Delhi Capitals skipper Jemimah Rodrigues (26 off 15 balls) also attacked as the duo added 58 runs in just 4.3 overs.
By the time Rodrigues was out trying to hit one six too many, the match as a contest was over. Shafali completed her half-century off just 27 balls and completed the formalities in a jiffy.
Earlier, off-spinner Rana, who got a look-in after Deepti Sharma was ruled out due to fever, showed her utility keeping the Lankan batters under tight leash with figures of 1 for 11 in 4 overs, including a maiden which certainly is a rarity in T20 cricket.
Charani, who made an impression during India's ODI World Cup triumph, took 2 for 23 in her quota of overs, while Vaishnavi after an impressive debut in the opening encounter, finished with 2 for 32, not letting the Islanders get easy runs in her second spell.
The last six wickets fell for just 24 runs, but what stood out during India’s bowling effort was their superb ground fielding. After a patchy show in the previous game, the improved sharpness in the field resulted in three run-outs.
Sri Lankan skipper Chamari Athapaththu (31 off 24 balls) looked in good nick as she deposited length deliveries from seamers Kranti Gaud and Arundhati Reddy over the ropes but it was Rana, who kept her quiet by repeatedly pitching on good length.
Unable to manoeuvre the strike and with the big hits suddenly drying up, Athapaththu chanced her arm at another delivery in which Rana had shortened the length slightly.
Not having transferred the weight into the lofted shot, Athapaththu's hoick was pouched cleanly by Amanjot Kaur at long-off.
This was after Athapaththu's opening partner Vishmi Gunaratne (1) had offered a simple return catch to Gaud.
Hasini Perera (22 off 28 balls) and Harshitha Samarawickrama (33 off 32 balls) did stitch a stand of 44 but they could never set the tempo against the Indian spin troika.
Once Hasini offered a tame return catch off a Charani full-toss, Sri Lankans never recovered and lost wickets in a heap towards the end.
