Gandhinagar: Around 150 government job aspirants who have cleared the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) and Teacher Aptitude Test (TAT) were detained by police on Tuesday after holding a protest to demand the recruitment of government teachers. The protest took place in front of Pathikashram, where police swiftly intervened, detaining the protesters and transporting them to various locations in the city.

A video circulating on social media claims that a six-month pregnant woman, who has passed the TET-TAT exams, is being inhumanely dragged and beaten by the police. The caption of the video states, “She is not a terrorist or a criminal, but a teacher who has passed the TET-TAT government exams and yet hasn't been placed for a year. She was inhumanely dragged & beaten up by the police for seeking what was promised by the government. Gujarat Model?”

Among those detained was Congress MLA Jignesh Mevani, who participated in the protest to show support.

The demonstrators were calling for the government to abandon the Gyan Sahyak scheme, which aims to fill teaching vacancies in schools on a contractual basis until regular appointments can be made. Clearing the TET is mandatory for recruitment as a teacher for Classes 1 to 8 in government and grant-in-aid schools, while clearing the TAT is required for teaching Classes 9 to 12.

Speaking to The Indian Express, Jignesh Mevani said, “Unemployment is at its peak in the state. When there are vacancies and qualified members, why is the government not filling up the posts? The candidates protested today (Tuesday) and I participated in it as a mark of support. Their demands are reasonable. I am going to hold a big protest of TET/TAT candidates in Ahmedabad soon.”

Dilipsinh Rajput, one of the detained candidates, stated, “As per government records, there are over 40,000 vacant posts and there are around 70,000 candidates who have cleared TET/TAT. Yet, the government is not conducting recruitment of regular teachers.”

Pilibhit (PTI): A 19-day-old elephant calf, brought from Bijnor, was placed under care at the Pilibhit Tiger Reserve (PTR) on Sunday, an official said and added that the calf got separated from its mother in the forest area of Bijnor.

The calf was born on December 2 in the Bijnor forest area and got separated from its mother shortly after birth, the official said.

The forest department made several attempts to reunite it with its mother, but without any success. To ensure the calf's safety and better care, it was decided to transfer it to the Pilibhit Tiger Reserve on the instructions of senior officials.

On Saturday, Deputy Director Manish Singh received the calf. Special arrangements have been made in the reserve for its care. It has been kept in a safe and clean environment to provide it with a natural setting and protect it from external noise and disturbances.

Singh told reporters that raising an 19-day-old calf is challenging.

It requires a special diet as a substitute for mother's milk and constant monitoring.

He said a special team has been formed to provide 24-hour care. Since the calf is very young, it is being cared for like a newborn baby.

According to Singh, the primary responsibility for monitoring the calf's health has been entrusted to PTR's veterinarian, Dr Daksh Gangwar. Under his supervision, a complete record of the calf's health checkups, diet, and body temperature is being maintained. The team is ensuring that the calf does not contract any infection.
