Udupi: In what is reportedly the first case of COVID-19 death in Udupi District, a man who arrived in the District from Mumbai, Maharashtra has succumbed to the virus at the KMC Hospital in Manipal. The person reportedly arrived in the District on May 13 and was sent to quarantine, after he complained of illness the patient was shifted to hospital for treatment.

Failing to respond to the treatment the person breathed his last on May 14, evening. Due to the travel history of the patient his throat swab samples were sent for COVID-19 testing after his death which has now returned positive for the virus. The information was shared by Udupi Deputy Commissioner G Jagadeesh.

Five people including the patient’s wife and two children have now been sent to quarantine at the SDM quarantine centre in Udyawar, the Deputy Commissioner further informed.

Apart from his family, 57 of his primary contacts and 37 secondary contacts who came in his contact at the Kundapur Quarantine Centre are also under observation at the quarantine centre, the DC said.

The DC also clarified that all the doctors and nurses at Kundapur and Manipal Hospital were using PPE and other precautionary measures were undertaken by the health workers while treating the patient. He however added that three hospital staffs of Manipal KMC have been sent to quarantine.

Vijayanagara: One man was killed and 12 others were injured after a truck hit vehicle they were traveling in on the National Highway 50 stretch on the outskirts of Koodligi in the district.

The accident victim, Madhu (27), is learned to have been an employee of Reliance Digital from Andhra Pradesh.

The vehicle was reportedly traveling from Bengaluru to Koodligi and the passengers are learned to have been seriously injured following the collision with the truck, which was found to have a Maharashtra registration.

Koodligi Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) Mallesh Dodmani and Circle Inspector Prahlad Channagiri arrived at the accident spot on being informed of the accident.

The police officers and locals rescued the injured passengers and got them shifted to the Koodligi Government Hospital. Some of the passengers were reportedly taken to the Ballari Trauma Care Centre for further treatment.

A case has been registered at the Koodligi Police Station and the officers are investigating the incident.
