Udupi: As part of a special enforcement drive undertaken in view of New Year celebrations, Christmas and other festivities, the Udupi district police registered 1,199 cases of traffic rule violations and collected fines amounting to ₹9,62,400.
The special drive was carried out between December 24 and December 31 to strengthen road safety measures across the district. As many as 29 check-posts were set up at key locations, and police personnel from across the district participated in the operation, Udupi Superintendent of Police Hariram Shankar said.

During the drive, police booked 103 cases of drunk driving, 803 cases of riding without helmets, 243 cases of driving without wearing seat belts, 35 cases of triple riding on two-wheelers, and 15 cases of using mobile phones while driving.
The police said the special operation was aimed at preventing accidents and ensuring safer roads during the festive period, when traffic movement increases significantly.

Bengaluru: The Holy month of Ramadan will start from Thursday, February 19, announced convener of the State Moon Sighting Committee Maulana Maqsood Imran Rashadi on Wednesday.
Speaking at a press conference after the Moon Sighting Committee meeting held at the State Waqf Board office on Cunningham Road in the city on Wednesday evening, he said that there is no information about moon sighting anywhere in the capital Bengaluru, including other districts.
“However, after receiving reports of moon sightings in neighbouring states including Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Bihar, Odisha, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Rajasthan and Delhi, it has been decided to start fasting from Thursday,” he said.
The meeting was attended by Maulana Mufti Iftikhar Ahmed Qasmi, Maulana Ejaz Ahmed Nadvi and other members of the ulema.
