Mangaluru, June 15: Though it was selected for the Central government’s Smart City Project, it has become a big headache for the city to dispose waste in a systematic way.
The Antony Waste Management was given contract for waste management in the city. As the labourers of the management company have been resorting to protests very often, the people have to face the problem and the city will have stinking smell.
Alleging that they were not given payment, the waste collecting labourers boycotted their work from Thursday and it has continued even on Friday, making the city hell. As a result, entire city is filled with garbage and started stinking. As the stray dogs scattered the waste kept in bags before the houses and shops, the city became unhygienic. With the heavy rains, the situation has become worse in the city.
The labourers said that they would not resume their work till the company cleared their salary. But the City Corporation had clarified that Rs 2.10 dues to be paid to the Antony Waste Management by the corporation was cleared on Thursday afternoon and the waste collection would resume from Friday morning. But till Fridayevening, the workers did not turn up to collect the waste.
This is not the first time that the labourers resort to protest because of the conflict between the city corporation and the company. Same situation was happened during last November and in 2016. But it is the people who suffer from their problem.
