Bengaluru: Karnataka High Court has issued a notice to the state government with regard to the arrest of cow vigilante Puneeth Kerehalli by the Central Crime Branch (CCB) police officers under the Goonda Act.
The division bench of the High Court, which heard the habeas corpus petition filed by Puneeth, asking for the orders issued by the Bengaluru City Police Commissioner to take him into custody as well as the orders issued by the government under the Karnataka Control of Organised Crimes Act, 2000 (KCOCA) on August 17 to be quashed, issued the notice to all the respondents, including the government and the City Police Commissioner. The bench also instructed them to file objections, before adjourning the hearing.
A case has been registered against Puneeth under the Goonda Act, based on allegations against him of indulging in anti-social and criminal activities, disturbing harmony in society. He allegedly formed an unofficial organization named 'Rashtra Raksha Pade' and is an accused in the murder of cattle transporter Idrees Pasha.

Bhatkal: More than 50 per cent of the members elected to the executive committee of Majlis-e-Islah wa Tanzeem in its triennial elections are new faces, with a significant number of young members getting an opportunity in the organisation’s executive committee.
Polling for eight constituencies in different parts of Bhatkal was held on May 12, in which 24 members were elected. In addition, 20 members were elected unopposed from seven constituencies.
The keenest contest was witnessed in Constituency No. 14, where 10 candidates were in the fray for five seats.
With this, the process of electing members to the organisation’s 132-member executive council from Bhatkal and other regions has been completed.
Election Commissioner Mohiuddin Altaf Kharoori said the induction of a large number of new members into the executive committee has brought fresh enthusiasm to the organisation.
