Belgavi: The country needs an alternative political voice and only regional parties can provide it. The Congress cannot defeat the BJP, but regional parties can, says All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul Muslimeen Supremo Asaduddin Owaisi.

Mr. Owaisi addressed two rallies in Belagavi and Kagwad on Tuesday in support of the Janata Dal (Secular).

Clad in a saffron headgear that is worn by members of the Maratha community during festivals in Belagavi, Mr. Owaisi was the star attraction at the rally.

At the rally in Belagavi, Mr. Owaisi denied allegations that he was here to divide Muslim votes. He said that he was supporting regional parties such as the Janata Dal(S) as it was distant from both the Congress and the BJP.

Mr. Owaisi said that he was equally critical of the BJP and the Congress. However, most of his speech was reserved for criticising the Congress.

He attacked the Congress for failing to protect Muslims from communal riots and for depriving the community of political power. He criticised the BJP on issues such as failure to keep promises of job creation and welfare of farmers.
