Belagavi: In a disturbing reminder of rural infrastructure gaps, a woman who had just given birth and her newborn were carried on shoulders for 1.5 km after an ambulance failed to reach their home in Adahallatti village, Belagavi district, due to completely damaged roads.

Shilpa, wife of Bheemashankar Naik, went into labour on Friday. Before any arrangements could be made to shift her to a hospital, she delivered the baby at home. The family immediately called the 108 ambulance service for urgent medical care, as reported by The New Indian Express on Tuesday.

However, the ambulance driver informed them that the vehicle could not navigate the broken road leading to their house. With no alternative, Shilpa and her baby were carried by family members through difficult terrain until they reached the ambulance parked 1.5 km away.

Fortunately, both mother and child were safely admitted to a hospital and are reported to be in good health.

The incident has sparked anger among local residents, who accused authorities of gross negligence. Villagers claimed that although funds had been sanctioned for road repairs, no work had been carried out. They have now demanded immediate intervention from the district administration to address the issue.
