Belagavi: The Belagavi city police have launched an investigation into the death of businessman Santosh Padmannavar, whose body was exhumed for an autopsy following concerns raised by his daughter regarding the circumstances of his demise.

Santosh Padmannavar, 47, passed away on October 9. His daughter, Sanjana Padmannavar, 18, who was studying in Bengaluru, returned home for the cremation, which was conducted according to Lingayat traditions. Initially, Sanjana was informed that her father's death was due to a cardiac arrest and that his eyes were donated as per his wishes. However, she found it difficult to believe that her otherwise healthy father could have died from a heart attack.

Sanjana's suspicions intensified when she discovered that footage from multiple CCTV cameras at their home had been deleted. Concerned about her mother Uma’s potential involvement, she, with the support of relatives, filed a complaint with the police.

In response to the complaint, police exhumed Santosh’s body for an autopsy. Preliminary investigations indicated potential foul play, as CCTV footage obtained from neighbors revealed two individuals entering the family home around the time of the death.

Belagavi Police Commissioner Ida Martin Marbaniang stated, “We are currently questioning four individuals, including the victim's mother Uma and two maids. We expect to gain more clarity once the autopsy report is received.

ISLAMABAD: At least two more cases of poliovirus were reported in Pakistan, taking the number of infections to 52 so far this year, a report said on Friday.

“The Regional Reference Laboratory for Polio Eradication at the National Institute of Health has confirmed the detection of two more wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) cases in Pakistan," an official statement said.

The fresh infections — a boy and a girl — were reported from the Dera Ismail Khan district of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province.

“Genetic sequencing of the samples collected from the children is underway," the statement read. Dera Ismail Khan, one of the seven polio-endemic districts of southern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, has reported five polio cases so far this year.

Of the 52 cases in the country this year, 24 are from Balochistan, 13 from Sindh, 13 from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and one each from Punjab and Islamabad.

There is no cure for polio. Only multiple doses of the oral polio vaccine and completion of the routine vaccination schedule for all children under the age of five can keep them protected.
