Bengaluru: A special National Investigation Agency (NIA) court in Bengaluru has sentenced Sariful Islam, a resident of West Bengal, to six years of imprisonment in connection with a 2018 fake currency case.
Islam, who was also fined Rs 5,000, was the seventh person to be convicted in the case.
NIA investigations revealed that Islam conspired with six others to traffic 41 counterfeit Indian currency notes, valued at Rs 82,000, from the Bangladesh border to various parts of India. He reportedly obtained a SIM card fraudulently to coordinate with his accomplices in procuring and circulating the fake notes.
Further investigations uncovered that the accused had previously supplied counterfeit notes worth Rs 10.30 lakh to the primary convict, Dalim Mia, in West Bengal.
The NIA continues its probe into the involvement of two Bangladeshi nationals who allegedly supplied the counterfeit currency. So far, three chargesheets have been filed in the case.
