Bengaluru: A 68-year-old woman, Shakira, was allegedly murdered by fellow beggars over a dispute related to alms money near Umar Farooq Mosque in Neelasandra during Ramadan, according to police.
According to Asianet News, Shakira had been begging in the area for several years.
Police said that devotees visiting the mosque during Ramadan were giving alms, and Shakira reportedly received more money due to her age. This is suspected to have led to jealousy among other beggars identified as Hussain, Reshma, and Fayaz.
The accused allegedly approached her and demanded a share of the money, saying, “People are giving you more money because you’re old. We haven’t collected much today. You have to give us an equal share of what you’ve got.”
When Shakira refused, the argument escalated. The accused picked up a wooden club lying nearby and struck her on the head, and she collapsed outside the mosque, dying at the spot.
Police from Ashok Nagar Police Station rushed to the scene. The body has been sent for post-mortem examination, and a case has been registered.
Efforts are under way to trace and arrest the accused. Further investigation is ongoing.
