Bengaluru: Former Union Minister and six times BJP MP, Ananth Kumar Hegde, who represents Uttara Kannada District in the Lok Sabha has once again triggered controversy by issuing a statement adding that the freedom movement led by Mahatma Gandhi was nothing but a drama.
Speaking at a public event Hegde added that the entire freedom struggle was staged wth the consent of British and their support.
“None of these so-called leaders were beaten by the police with batons even once. Their independence movement was one big drama. It was staged by these leaders with the approval of the British. It was not a genuine fight. It was an ‘adjustment’ freedom struggle,” he said.
"These Congress people keep saying that we got independence because of the fast unto death or satyagraha. That is not true. The British did not leave India because of satyagraha,” he said.
Hegde further went on to add that RSS had no role to play in the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi.
The BJP however distanced itself from Hegde’s comments and added that the party doesn’t endorse what Hegde said during the event.
State BJP spokesperson G Madhusudhan said the RSS holds Mahatma Gandhi in high esteem and won’t support such “cheap” remarks.
