Belagavi: BJP state president B.Y. Vijayendra has sharply criticised the Congress-led state government for its handling of essential commodity price hikes, claiming that the ongoing ‘Jan Akrosh Yatra’ has brought to light the growing public discontent.
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Vijayendra accused Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and his cabinet colleagues of being out of touch with the reality faced by ordinary citizens. He asserted that the Congress leadership, confined within the air-conditioned offices of Bengaluru, was under the false impression that people were supportive due to the government’s welfare schemes. However, he pointed out that the rising costs of essential products were severely affecting people's daily lives.
“We have been exposing the misrule of Congress and the government has lost popularity in 20-months-time and has been facing anti-incumbency,” Deccan Herald quoted him as saying.
The saffron party leader further criticised the government for increasing the prices of more than fifty essential commodities, which he said was directly impacting people, particularly in rural areas. “From contractors to officials, people were ending their lives due to the policies of the Congress government,” he alleged.
The first phase of the Jan Akrosh Yatra had covered districts such as Mysuru, Mandya, Udupi, Mangaluru, and Uttar Kannada earlier in January. The second phase, which commenced today in Belagavi, aims to continue the protest to more districts.
Vijayendra also criticised Siddaramaiah and his cabinet colleagues for not engaging with the rural populace, claiming that they remained unaware of the hardships people were facing, the report added.
He pointed to significant price hikes, including a Rs 9 increase in milk prices, a Rs 3 rise in petrol, and a Rs 5 surge in diesel prices, all of which have had a profound impact on daily life.
