CM Kumaraswamy condemns BJP over Mumbai, Vidhana Soudha incidents
Bengaluru, Jul 10: Condemning the BJP over detention of his cabinet colleagues in Mumbai and for the protest at the Vidhana Soudha here, Karnataka Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy Wednesday accused it of crossing all boundaries of democracy and civil code of conduct.
In a strongly-worded statement here, he sought to know from the BJP whether it was polity of democracy or the ugly display of its tyrannical mindset.
Maintaining that four Karnataka Ministers, including D K Shivakumar, were taken into custody by Mumbai police, he said it was not only a violation of the protocol but also a reflection of the "feudal mindset".
Karnataka has become a laughing stock due to their (BJPs) behaviour guided by their lust for power. Is it a polity of democracy or an ugly display of its tyrannical mindset? Kumaraswamy said.
He charged that the BJPs behaviour "crossed all the boundaries of democracy and the civil code of conduct."
The way the ministers, elected representatives, were treated was not only a violation of the protocol but also a reflection of the feudal mindset. The BJP government in Maharashtra should have given protection to the minister but they were treated with indignity.It has made it clear that the Maharashtra government is out to destabilise the Karnataka government, Kumaraswamy alleged.
Shivakumar and his Congress colleagues Milind Deora and Naseem Khan were detained Wednesday outside the Renaissance Hotel where the rebel MLAs are holed up as they insisted on meeting the legislators who have resigned, triggering a crisis for the Congress-JDS coalition government.
Referring to BJP's protest against alleged detention of another Congress rebel MLA K Sudhakar in the Vidhana Soudha after he resigned, Kumaraswamy said it tarnished the rich political tradition of Karnataka.
Congress leaders tried in vain to convince the MLA to withdraw his resignation, but he stuck to his stand.
Alleging that he was detained by the Congress leaders, BJP leaders and MLAs had staged a protest before police escorted Sudhakar out of the premises.
Sudhakar was among the two MLAs who resigned from the assembly Wednesday.

Karnataka Assembly passes hate speech bill amid din
Belagavi (Karnataka), Dec 18 (PTI): The Karnataka Assembly on Thursday passed a bill against hate speech amid a din.
The Hate Speech and Hate Crimes (Prevention) Bill, the first such law in the country, has a provision for a jail term up to seven years and fine up to Rs one lakh.
It was passed amid din by the BJP MLAs.
The bill, cleared by the cabinet on December 4, was presented in the House by Home Minister G Parameshwara on December 10.
The Minister said the provision for 10 years jail term in the event of repeated offence has been reduced to seven years.
According to the bill, any expression, which is made, published or circulated in words either spoken or written or by signs or by visible representations or through electronic communication or otherwise, in public view, with an intention to cause injury, disharmony or feelings of enmity or hatred or ill-will against person alive or dead, class or group of persons or community, to meet any prejudicial interest, is hate speech.
During the discussion, Urban Development Minister Byrathi Suresh said coastal Karnataka is "burning" due to hate speech and hate crime.
BJP MLAs from the region raised objections to this and then trooped into the well of the house. Other BJP legislators followed them.
Later, the bill was passed.
