Bengaluru: Chief Minister Siddaramaiah recently promised to regularise the services of over 12,000 pourakarmikas on the occasion of International Workers’ Day (May 1), affirming their right to dignified employment. The announcement was made during the 25th annual convention of the Karnataka State Pourakarmikas’ Association.
Siddaramaiah stressed that it was the government's responsibility to meet the needs and demands of pourakarmikas. "Everyone is equal before the law, and jobs are sacred. It is unfair to be disrespectful towards any of you. Pourakarmikas have dignity, and as such, your jobs will be regularised on Workers’ Day," he said.
He highlighted the transformative power of education, encouraging the children of pourakarmikas to pursue education, which he believes will lead to dignity and better opportunities for their future.
In addition to pourakarmikas, the Chief Minister also announced that garbage truck drivers, who have been working on a contract basis, would have their positions regularised.
Siddaramaiah further stated that pourakarmikas would be given a cashless health card and assured that verification of pending documents would be completed shortly.
He also announced international exposure trips for civic workers. "Every year, 1,000 pourakarmikas would be sent on international trips. The pourakarmika community too must develop global awareness," he said.
Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, who holds the Bengaluru Development portfolio, said the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has earmarked Rs 730 crore for the welfare of pourakarmikas.
