Vijayapura, October 10: Former prime minister and JDS supremo H.D. Deve Gowda said that it was decided to field Madhu Bangarappa as Congress-JDS candidate from Shivamogga Lok Sabha constituency in the by-election to be held in November.

Speaking to reporters here on Wednesday, Deve Gowda said that the Congress and JDS leaders who held a meeting on Tuesday, took a unanimous decision to field Madhu Bangarappa from Shivamogga. Madhu Bangarappa was in foreign trip and as soon as he returned, it would be discussed with him. If he hesitated to contest, the JDS would hold a discussion with the Congress leaders again and take a decision, he said.

The JDS would shortly announce candidates to Mandya Lok Sabha seat and Ramanagar Assembly seat. None of his grandchildren would contest from Mandya. Instead of them, local leaders would be given opportunity, he said.

After discussing with the Congress leaders, a candidate would be finalized for Ballary constituency. He held discussion with Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, Coordination Committee Chairman Siddaramaiah, Deputy Chief Minister Dr. G. Parameshwar and KPCC President Dinesh Gundu Rao on by-elections, he said.

Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy has been continuing the Congress government programmes in the coalition government. Both the Congress and JDS have unity among themselves. The state government has been giving pro-people administration, he claimed.

Before this, Deve Gowda inaugurated Dasara celebrations and Krishi Mela at Tamba village in Indi taluk.  JDS MLA Devananda Chauhan, District Minister M.C. Managoli, Health Minister Shivanand Patil and others were present.

Kolkata (PTI): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday described the Waqf (Amendment) Bill as “anti-secular”, claiming that it would snatch the rights of Muslims.

Banerjee, speaking in the assembly, also said the Centre did not consult with states over the matter.

“The bill is anti-federal and anti-secular; it is a deliberate attempt to malign a particular section. It will snatch the rights of Muslims... The Centre did not consult with us on the Waqf Bill,” she said.

The chief minister added that “if any religion was attacked”, she would wholeheartedly condemn it.

Opposition parties have stridently criticised the amendments proposed by the bill in the existing Waqf Act, alleging that they violate the religious rights of Muslims.

The ruling BJP has asserted that the amendments will bring transparency in the functioning of the Waqf boards and make them accountable.

A parliamentary committee has been constituted to scrutinise the contentious bill.
