Debt-ridden farmer in Hassan allegedly commits suicide by hanging
Hassan: A farmer in Jodi Mallappanahalli of the taluk, Venkategowda (48) is reported to have committed suicide by hanging allegedly owing to more than Rs 7.6 lakh of debt and after facing pressure from the lenders.
The deceased farmer is learned to have borrowed up to Rs 3.7 lakh from financial agencies including banks and agricultural cooperative societies. He had an additional loan of Rs 3.9 lakh.
The continued pressure from the lenders to clear the debts, which added up to Rs 7.6 lakh, is suspected to have pushed Venkategowda to a state of depression and led him to take his own life by hanging.
Gorur Police have registered a case in relation to the farmer’s suicide. The officers have visited the spot and conducted an inquiry.

Dakshina Kannada Qazi declares Eid-Ul-Adha celebration on May 28
Bengaluru: The State Moon Sighting Committee has announced that Bakrid (Eid al-Adha) will be celebrated across Karnataka on May 28, as there were no confirmed reports of the sighting of the crescent moon marking the beginning of the month of Dhul Hijjah from any state in the country.
The decision was taken at a meeting of the committee held on Sunday evening at the office of the Karnataka State Waqf Board on Cunningham Road in Bengaluru.
Committee members said the announcement was made after gathering information regarding moon sighting from various districts of Karnataka as well as moon sighting committees in other states.
Dakshina Kannada Qazi Al-Haj Twaka Ahmed Musliar also made similar announcement adding that Eid-Ul-Adha will be celebrated on May 28 in Dakshina Kannada district.
