Bengaluru: Karnataka cabinet minister DK Shivakumar, who is facing the charges of willfully evading tax, filing of false income tax returns and criminal conspiracy and was served with Enforcement Directorate’s summons to be present in person at its office on February 8, in connection with the investigations, has moved to the Karnataka High Court seeking the quashing ED summons and IT proceedings against him.

In the summons, Saurabh Mehta, Assistant Director, ED, has stated that he is investigating under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002 and the attendance of Shivakumar is necessary for the same.

The minister has challenged the ED summon in the High Court citing the whole proceeding by the ED as without jurisdiction. Shivkumar has also urged the court to quash the proceedings initiated by the Income Tax department in the sanction dated May 28, 2018, issued by Principal Director of Income Tax (Investigations), and the subsequent complaint registered before the Special Court for Economic Offences, Bengaluru.

The whole issue dates back to August 2017, when the I-T Department conducted raids on properties of Shivakumar in Delhi and Bengaluru, followed by which the I-T sanctioned prosecution of Shivakumar under various sectors of I-T act and 120-B of IPC.

His plea was not listed to be heard by any bench till Tuesday afternoon.

Bengaluru: Vidyaranyapura police have arrested four persons, including a man posing as a Police Sub-Inspector (PSI), for allegedly breaking into a house, threatening the occupants, and extorting money while wearing police uniforms.

According to the police, Mallikarjuna had failed the PSI examination twice and later falsely projected himself as a PSI. He allegedly conducted photo shoots in his hometown, Siraguppa, wearing a police uniform, baton, cap, and shoes, claiming to be serving as a PSI in Bengaluru.

On December 7, the four accused allegedly went to the house of Naveen in the Vidyaranyapura limits, threatened him with a stick and an iron rod, and claimed they had information that he was selling ganja. Under the pretext of searching, they allegedly extorted ₹87,000 through bank transfer, ₹53,000 in cash kept in the house, and ₹2,000 from his wallet.

Following Naveen’s complaint, Vidyaranyapura police registered a case and launched an operation, leading to the arrest of all four accused. Police have seized ₹45,000 in cash and the car used to commit the crime.
Further investigation is underway.
